PROJECT TITLE: North Bessemer Tunnel - Repairs to the North and South Portal Walls DESCRIPTION: Request for Proposal (RFP) for repairs to the north and south portals for the Union Railroad (URR) Company's North Bessemer Tunnel, which is located in Penn Hills, PA in Allegheny County near the cross streets of Milltown Road and Leechburg Road. The URR is a company owned by Transtar, Inc., which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation (USS). This RFP solicits your participation in a competitive, public bid process. This project is being funded under the 2014 Rail Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP). The repairs will consist of the following activities: 8 North Portal: Stabilize the retaining walls with galvanized, self-drilling, groutable rockbolts. Scale (mechanically or by hand) all deteriorated material. 8 South Portal: Stabilize the south embankment with grouted rockbolts and the application of shotcrete in-fill. 8 Portal Drainage: Install a concrete flume at the north portal behind the east and west retaining walls and behind the headwall.
